DoT to finalise report on slow broadband for PMO by July 21, 2014

July 16, 2014

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to finalise a report on the issues pertaining to the slow broadband speed in the country, by July 21, 2014. This comes after the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) directed the telecom department to give an explanation for slow broadband speed in the country.

The move is a part of the government’s efforts to formulate the vision, goals and challenges for the telecom sector. With improvement in technology and video service quality, there has been an increased demand for high broadband speed.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently notified that minimum speed of broadband to be 512 kbps. The regulator had stated that minimum speed offered by operators does not even qualify for broadband services. For wireless high-speed broadband services, 3G operators promise mobile Internet speed of 7.1-21 mbps. However, the minimum speed reported by operators to TRAI is between 399 kbps and 2.48 Mbps.

The PMO has also directed DoT, along with the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to all universities, and leverage rural telephony and broadband highway programme to ensure increase domestic production of telecom equipments.
